The Meaning of ``Skokomish``

Bruce Miller is a noted artist, ceremonial leader and teacher from the Skokomish Nation near Shelton. Originally the name “Skokomish” referred to a community of Twana speaking people who lived along the Skokomish River and its north fork. In translation Skokomish means “people of the big river”.  The Skokomish were one of at least nine separate tuwaduq speaking villages who collectively called themselves tuwaduq, which has been anglicized to Twana.

Take part in an educational journey that takes you on a path of greater understanding in regard to the historical Tuwaduq territory via our online map that provides insight on territorial boundaries, dates of significance, and other related data.
